Clearwater FS-Series
The "Best Available Technology" for Fish Protection
The "Double Safety" Factor
Every model in the Clearwater FS-Series—including both the cylindrical FSCW and shallow-water FSSW screens—is an Active System featuring continuous, water-driven hydraulic cleaning. While federal guidelines permit "Active" screens to operate at an approach velocity of 0.40 fps, our FS-Series is intentionally governed by its massive surface area to max out at the ultra-safe "Passive Limit" of 0.20 fps. This is sized to protect even the weakest swimming fry, should cleaning ever temporarily fail.
Safely excludes sensitive species
Note: NMFS and several state criteria permit up to 0.33 fps for fry in flowing water — our 0.20 fps target is intentionally more conservative.
Built to Comply
-
•
Mesh: Heavy-duty 12-Mesh Stainless (~0.055" opening - safely smaller than the federal 3/32" maximum limit).
-
•
Porosity: ~40-50% Open Area.
-
•
Quiescent Ready: Compliant for lakes & slack-tide.
-
•
Flow Guard (Overdraw Protection): An engineered orifice acts as a built-in flow brake — overdraw attempts are met with rapidly rising head loss, holding the pump near its fish-safe flow.
-
•
Active Monitoring Ready: We fit each unit with the sensor ports your system needs — Differential Pressure (DP), rotation verification, and similar — from commonly available fittings as part of the build. Running a specialized sensor? Send us the fitting and we'll weld it on.
Why Choose the FS-Series?
A "Set It and Forget It" solution that protects your infrastructure and the fishery.
Clearwater Iso-Flow Core™
Engineered to keep the flow through the wetted screen as even as possible. This completely eliminates high-velocity suction "hotspots," allowing for a perfectly even flow distribution.
Built for Compliance Sizing
We've eliminated sizing guesswork. Model numbers round down to their Fish-Safe baseline at the strictest regulatory limit (0.20 fps). Specify an FSCW 2400, and it's built to meet rigorous fish-screen criteria nationwide.
Zero-Power Operation
Driven entirely by water pressure from your pump's discharge. No electric motors, gearboxes, or remote solar panels are required at the intake site.
No External Moving Parts
Unlike rotary drum screens, our system has no external chains, sprockets, or seals to jam with driftwood or freeze in winter. All mechanisms are safely protected inside.
Universal Installation
Heavy-duty sealed bearings allow the screen to be mounted at any angle—vertical, horizontal, or inclined—making it perfect for uneven riverbanks or floating platforms.
Built for Broad Compliance
Best Available Technology (BAT), built to meet the rigorous anadromous salmonid criteria of NOAA/NMFS (Federal), CDFW (California), and WDFW (Washington).
Self-Protecting Insurance
By continuously blasting debris off the intake, the screen prevents pump cavitation and protects expensive impellers from abrasive wear, ensuring uninterrupted water delivery.
Active Monitoring Ready
We add the sensor ports your SCADA needs — DP, rotation verification, and the like — from commonly available fittings. Have a specialty sensor? Send it and we'll weld it in.

Analyzing: FSCW 1000
1. TOTAL WETTED AREA (Atotal)
2. MAXIMUM SAFE FLOW (Q)
Calculated to stay at or below the ultra-safe 0.20 fps passive limit, supporting our Double Safety Factor.
3. FLOW GUARD (ORIFICE RESTRICTION)
Engineered to induce severe head loss (Hf) that acts as a built-in flow brake on pump overdraws.
